aQuellé Spar Knockout Soccer Tournament

In 2001, aQuellé and Spar joined forces to create the dynamic aQuellé Spar Knockout Soccer Tournament.

The aim of this sponsorship is to involve the community in promoting and developing amateur soccer in KwaZulu Natal. The Spar stores in their respective communities sponsor a local soccer team to take part in a regional final, the regions being the four SAFA designated regions of Eastern, Northern, Southern KZN and Midlands. It is also an opportunity for regional SAFA representatives to identify emerging talent amongst local amateur soccer players.

aQuellé Spar Soccer 2008

After lots of exciting soccer played all over the province, the following 8 teams broke through to make it to the finals – Langa, Gateway, Paulpietersburg, Louwsberg, Camperdown, Dunbars (Cato Ridge), Von Wissel (Swaziland) and Esikhawini.

The finals weekend took place at the King Zwelithini Soccer Stadium in Umlazi on the 12th and 13th of July. As anticipated, this was a showcase of some of the finest young soccer talent in KwaZulu Natal. A ladies exhibition match provided an entertaining curtain raiser before the big match on Sunday. The final then kicked off with Camperdown Spar and Dunbars Spar playing each other after having been the triumphant winners in the Semi-finals. The tough match, which went into extra time, penalty shoot-out and even the nail-biting Sudden Death, eventually saw the Camperdown Spar team emerging as the aQuellé Spar Knockout Soccer Tournament 2008 winners.

There was ample opportunity for spectators to take in all the action – entrance to the grounds was free and lots of aQuellé and Spar goodies were handed out.
